Team Blitz History

Team Blitz was created in the Fall of 2002 after Bert Jacoby and Ryan Stevens separated from the William and Mary cross country team. As college sophomores in excellent fitness the two decided that they still wanted to race, and Team Blitz was born.

In the two years since its creation, Team Blitz has been through many stages. Poor performances and enticing alternatives caused a spike in the participation of many members, but still Team Blitz perservered. Bert and Ryan continued to compete in the Colonial Half Marathon, which has become the benchmark race for Team Blitz, and Bert ran in the 2002 Marine Corps Marathon and the 2004 Boston Marathon2004. In the summer of 2004, Ryan participated in a number of triathalons.

The Fall of 2004 brought about a new "Golden Age" of Team Blitz. With several members of the William & Mary Cross Country/Track team leaving the program, Team Blitz had an enormous turnout. This "recruiting class" was highlighted by senior Trevor Cable, 4th place at Penn Relays in the mile as a senior in high school and sophomores Mike McGinnis and Ben Beiter, Oakton High School graduates and Blue Ridge Running Camp Alums. Even more impressive was the fact that Team Blitz aquired it's very own freshman, Marshal Miller, who unknowningly took a Team Blitz recruiting trip to Bert's apartment the pervious spring.

The 2004-2005 school year has certainly been fruitful for Team Blitz. With membership increasing over 400%, the team has been able to participate in numerous road races and social events, including the Shamrock Marathon and the Team Blitz Invitational Beer Mile. The team continues to train and race together, forming life-long friendships and encouraging non-NCAA collegiate running amongst all students.
